The theme for the boy’s basketball team this season has been to share the basketball and it seemingly all came together for the Pirates on the road against Pennsauken Tech Tuesday afternoon in a 67-47 victory to move to 5-0.
“When they share the ball, great things happen,” head coach Mike Fries said. “They move the ball, they get open shots, and they get good looks.”
The ball movement by the Pirates was the best it’s been all season on Tuesday, which is evidenced by the team leading from its opening possession to the final buzzer.
“We enjoy the win for the next eight hours and then we get down to business tomorrow,” Fries said. “We have to win and move on. We need to focus on the next opponent. The next team is Florence on Thursday and that’s a tough place to play up there.”
Cinnaminson made nary a mistake, forced Pennsauken Tech into plenty of them, and received strong play from all 10 players who saw time on the court.
“It wasn’t as easy as it looks,” senior Pat McCarthy said. “It’s more of a process. It’s the idea that we want to win and that’s the way we’re gonna win because everyone’s good on this team.”
The Pirates drained six shots from beyond the arc and shot 5-of-12 from the free throw line. The defense again picked up a handful of steals and didn’t allow the Tornados to do much of anything on offense from the start.
Cinnaminson jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and finished the first quarter with a 22-13 advantage. The largest lead of the first half came at the end of the second quarter with the Pirates leading 41-27.
Pennsauken Tech did its best to make it a game to start the third quarter, hitting two consecutive threes to make it a 41-33 game, but Cinnaminson had an answer for everything throw its way.
“Our rebounding is going to be huge Thursday,” Fries said. “We did a nice job on the boards tonight and we’ve been out-rebounding our opponents this year. We just need to keep that intensity up, rebound, then look to run.”
The Pirates quickly pushed their lead back to 14 at 49-35 and led 55-37 after three quarters. Cinnaminson poured on 12 more points in the fourth en route to the 67-47 victory.
Devon Taylor and Rich Rickus led the Pirates with 14 points apiece. Conor Bresnahan and McCarthy finished with 13 and 12, respectively. Eight of the Pirates 10 players to see time today picked up points.
“Whenever somebody’s not having a great day, we can go into our bench and trust that guy coming on,” McCarthy said. “Everyone’s hungry, everyone wants to get minutes, everyone wants to help out.”
Cinnaminson returns to the court on Thursday, January 7 with a 5:15pm contest at Florence.
“We have to come in with the same intensity that we came out with today,” McCarthy said. Everyday we gotta work hard and come out with intensity. We have the talent to get the win.”
