The forecast for Wednesday afternoon was not pretty. Severe, gusty thunderstorms with the potential for hail in the South Jersey region. The lightning stayed away, which allowed the girl’s track and field team to host Bordentown for a meet.

The Pirates grabbed an 81-55 victory to move to 2-0 on the young season.

Cinnaminson dominated almost the entire meet, grabbing victories in the high jump, the pole vault, the 4×4 relay, the triple jump, the 100 meter hurdles and the 400 meter hurdles just to name a few.

The girl’s squad is a young one this season, but head coach Derek Moore is seeing progress across all of the events.

“They are starting to get it. The first couple of weeks you have to tell them what to do, where to be, how to be, what to expect. Once the third or fourth meet rolls around they kind of start to understand what their role is. They understand the intensity they need to have. They understand that they are here to score points and win.”

The first win of the season for the Pirates came against Pemberton Township High School. The Pirates have also competed at the Hall of Fame Relays, the West Deptford Relays and the Woodbury Relays.

With the girls seeing a lot of time on the track and in the field over the past two weeks, Moore has been able to point out a couple of pleasant surprises so far this spring.

One of those surprises is sophomore high jumper Danielle Sobolusky.

“Danielle Sobolusky, a sophomore, had never played a sport in her life until last year when she began playing volleyball. She decided to go out for track this year and she is probably one of our better high jumpers at this point. She is showing promise.”

The Pirates will take on Delran next week at home, and Coach Moore is looking for the girls to drop some time in the running events as the team looks to improve as the season goes on.

“We need to drop some time a little bit in the running events. Our jumping events need to improve a little bit. We are young, so every week we are getting a little better. That’s all I can ask for.”

The meet against Delran is scheduled for Tuesday, April 28 at 3:45pm.
