On June 8, 2016, the Cinnaminson Elite softball team made their debut Cinnaminson’s South Jersey Collegiate Softball League (SJCSL) with a doubleheader.
In their first-ever game in the league the Elite fell to team Blue by a score of 11-1. The girls had a stronger showing in the next game against team Red, scoring 10 runs in the first inning alone. The final score of the game was 12-5, making Cinnaminson Elite’s record 1-1.
The SJCSL was created just last year. It’s a competitive, 23-and-under softball league played in the summer for girls to improve and grow in their 0ff-season.
Cinnaminson Elite is comprised of girls of varying skill levels and experience. Some players are incoming freshmen, while others started varsity this year.
There are a handful of girls who played in college this year on the Elite team.
The main idea, however, is to bring together the girls that will make up the team during regular spring season next year.
Elite and Cinnaminson High School varsity softball head coach Tracy Bart scouted SJCSL games last year to see if playing in the league would be a worthwhile experience for Cinnaminson High School’s softball team.
Most of the girls on opposing teams are currently playing in college and participate in the SJCSL to stay active and improve during the off-season. This means the Elite is facing girls with experience in a more competitive environment than they’ve ever seen.
For Bart, facing fast pitchers is a huge benefit for the girls.
“A 22, 23-year old pitching the ball is going to be a lot harder and faster than a 17, 18-year old pitching the ball,” Bart said.
The softball team at CHS finished their regular season in late May at West Deptford with a record of 12-13.
“We just want to keep building off our success of last season and carry that into next season,” Bart said.”They’re so committed and dedicated to improving themselves and improving the program.”
Cinn City Sports will have coverage throughout the season of the Elite team in the SJCSL. All games are played at Wood Park on Wednesdays and Sundays through the middle of July at 6:30 and 8:15pm.
