It was sort of a slow start for Pirates football on Friday night at Bordentown, but it turned into a 38-0 victory, a 3-0 overall record and a 2-0 division record to begin the 2015 season.
Cinnaminson came into Friday night’s game with victories over Robbinsville and Willingboro, but head coach Mario Patrizi knew his team had to be at the top of its game to take down the Scotties.
“We started off slow, the first eight to ten minutes of the game. It was our first away game. I give Bordentown credit. I thought their scheme was pretty good in the first half. Once we started wearing them down a little bit, things started opening up.”
The Pirates put two points on the scoreboard early in the first quarter when the punt coverage team recorded a safety. The first offensive score of the game came with 3:25 left in the opening stanza when quarterback Shaun Davilla snuck in from two yards out to give Cinnaminson an 8-0 lead after a missed kick.
“We have been practicing a lot harder, focusing on the little details so we can get to the championship level,” Davilla said. “I’ve been getting more comfortable in the pocket, slowing the game down and just trusting my o-line.”
Cinnaminson really took flight in the second quarter, which saw them score 16 points en route to a 24-0 lead at halftime. Davilla scored his second rushing touchdown of the game, this time from four yards out and then hit Devon Taylor for the two-point conversion for a 16-0 lead.
The Pirates added a score at the end of the half on a 41-yard Hail Mary from Davilla to Kevin Schoch with no time left on the clock. Davilla ran in the two-point conversion attempt for a 24-0 lead.
On the Pirates final drive of the first half, Cinnaminson had a 1st & 12, a 2nd & 29 and a 3rd & 12. The Pirates dug out of those holes on runs by Rashad Raymond of 17 and 24 yards to setup the Hail Mary.
Raymond finished the night with 120 yards on the ground on just nine carries. Schoch made four catches for 81 yards and the one score.
“We have been out here working hard to get to the next level,” Raymond said. “The blocking was great. I actually had time to stand around and look for a hole so I could bust through it.”
Cinnaminson added two more touchdowns in the third quarter when Davilla hit Devon Taylor from 10 yards out on a pass play and Naudica Flagg ran one in from five yards out to put the icing on the cake.
The Pirates defense dominated once again, posting the team’s second shutout of the season. In 12 quarters of play in 2015, the Pirates have allowed a total of 16 points, all to Willingboro last week.
“You win games with your defense,” Patrizi said. “Your defense creates offense. It creates field position and it does a lot of good things. If your defense is giving up big chunks of yards, you’re in trouble because you can’t flip that field.”
This was the 13th win for the Pirates in the series against Bordentown (0-3, 0-2). Patrizi offered his final thoughts on his team’s 3-0 start to the season.
“There’s always room for improvement. We’re a good team. We’re not great by any means right now. We’re exactly where I think we should be right now and we will keep getting better.”
Pirates football is on the road again on Saturday, October 3 at 3pm at Hamilton High School West.
“We looked great tonight,” Davilla said. We’re going to go out next week and get another ‘W’ after a hard week in practice.”
