Weather Wreaking Havoc on Spring Schedules

It comes with the territory when playing an outdoor sport in the early months of the spring season, but the weather has not been cooperative in 2015.

With a late snowstorm that canceled quite a few scrimmages, some of the varsity teams at Cinnaminson High School did not get to take part in a ton of game action prior to the start of the regular season.

A host of games have either been canceled or postponed over the season’s first month, which comes to an end this week. But, you won’t find coaches or players blaming the weather or making excuses.

It is commonplace throughout New Jersey that the weather will wreak havoc on your season at one point or another.

Once we exited the threat of snow, the rains came, and plenty of it fell on the fields. Hey, the grass is green and looks beautiful, but enough is enough already.

It is quite possible that this coming week will be the first full week of the spring season where there aren’t any games postponed or canceled due to the weather.

Right now, the forecast is favorable, with very little chance of rain. Will the Pirates actually get in all of their scheduled games? We will see, but it looks like it will happen.

Even though the forecast this past Wednesday was pretty gloomy, both of the track and field teams were able to get in their meets against Bordentown. I don’t know what the conditions were like in Bordentown, but the weather did not go easy on the girl’s meet here at home.

With 30+ MPH winds, heavy rain and even hail, the conditions were horrendous. Somehow, the teams were able to complete the entire meet.

That same day, baseball traveled to Pemberton Township in what was a makeup game due to postponement on Tuesday of the same week.

After the seventh inning of a 6-6 game, the umpires called the game. The reasoning given was that the umpires did not like the field conditions. That game will be completed on Monday, in Pemberton, beginning at 3:45pm in the top of the eighth inning.

Both lacrosse programs were supposed to host Rancocas Valley on Monday of last week. The weather postponed those games to Saturday, which forced girl’s lacrosse to reschedule an already scheduled meeting with Williamstown. The Williamstown game will now be played on Saturday, May 9 at 11am at home.

Somehow, the softball schedule has not endured as many cancellations or postponements as other teams this spring, with just one game being moved. The game scheduled for this past Monday against Riverside is not set for Saturday, May 2 at 2:30pm at home.

Boy’s tennis should have played 9 games by now. They are 2-3. Four of their games have either been postponed or canceled due to the weather.

Golf, much like softball, has somehow lucked out this season in regards to the weather. They have had just one game postponed, against Delran, and that has already been played.

Finally, the only team that has yet to be affected by the weather, boy’s volleyball. That is the benefit of playing indoors.

Can we play an entire week of games without any postponements or cancellations? Let’s hope so. These kids want to play. They want to compete. And, they want to win. If the weather begins to cooperate, there’s no telling how much excitement the spring season will bring.
