The Cinnaminson High School softball team came into Thursday’s non-league contest with Glassboro in need of a win. The Pirates accomplished more than just getting back in the win column with a resounding 8-0 shutout of the Bulldogs.
Cinnaminson scored early and often to put the Bulldogs behind and then never looked back to move to 8-12 overall.
“It’s a nice game,” head coach Tracy Bart said. “It’s a good confidence booster going into the playoffs. They hit the ball well today, which is nice to see.”
Rebecca Martino got the start in the circle today as Chelsea Price and Rebecca Proctor also picked up innings.
Kelly Sigmund got it started offensively for the Pirates, drawing a walk in the bottom of the first before being driven home on an RBI triple to right by Brooke Figiel.
“It feels great,” second baseman Tori Robinson said. “When you’re in a slump like that, you need a great confidence booster. When the whole team’s going, you feel like you can do it every time. That’s what we needed.”
The Pirates made it a 3-0 game in the bottom of the second with back-to-back RBI singles from Gia Trzaska and Sigmund.
All while the offense was clicking, Martino was throwing a gem. She tossed just three innings, but was dominant. Martino allowed just one hit and it came to the second batter of her final inning. She also struck out three and set the side down in order twice.
“If their mindset is right, they know they can do it,” Robinson said of the pitching staff. “They have the fielders to back them up. It’s important that they know they can get it done themselves.”
Cinnaminson doubled its lead in the bottom of the third when Jess Ferris picked up an RBI single with two outs. After a single from Madison Figiel, Robinson plated two with a single to left.
Chelsea Price entered the circle in the top of the fourth and picked up right where Martino left off, retiring the side in order.
The Pirates added their final two runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth, again with two outs, when Brenna MacNair recorded a two-run single to center.
Price tossed three scoreless innings, allowing just one baserunner (via an error) and struck out five.
Rebecca Proctor entered the circle for the seventh and retired the side in order to end the game and hand the Pirates an 8-0 win, snapping their four-game losing streak.
“I wanted to make sure I got them all innings today,” Bart said. “It’s supposed to rain tomorrow and then we don’t play again until next Thursday.”
The Pirates should learn their playoff seeding early next week.
“Home playoff games are huge advantage,” Robinson said. “Look at our field. It’s not like other fields. We’re excited. We don’t have to go on that two hour bus ride.”
Cinnaminson is home again on Friday when Pitman visits for a 4pm non-league contest.
“If we lose this game because of rain, I’d like to reschedule it sometime next week, maybe Tuesday or Wednesday,” Bart said. “So we don’t sit around for a week. I’d like to be playing.”
