Softball traveled to Bordentown on Thursday night for a sixth straight road game to begin the 2016 season and fell by a score of 10-0 in five innings for a third straight loss.
This is the third time the Pirates have been shutout in 2016.
Cinnaminson is now 1-5 on the season overall and 0-1 in the Patriot Division. The Pirates will not return to the field until Monday, April 11 with another road game, this one at Burlington Township.
Scotties pitcher Katie Schroeder was dominant tonight, tossing a no-hitter and allowing just one baserunner. The lone baserunner came via walk. Schroeder struck out five in the win.
“I told them it’s the first week of the season,” head coach Tracy Bart said. “There’s plenty of season left to turn this around and get it right. We are in week one. It doesn’t matter how you start, it’s how you finish.”
The Pirates went down 1, 2, 3 in four of their five at-bats tonight.
Following a game in which the offense put up 14 runs on 16 hits, Cinnaminson had trouble making hard contact against Schroeder. The Pirates offense did not have an out recorded by a Scotties outfielder in the loss.
The good that comes from this game is the defense. Even though there were errors made there were some fantastic defensive plays on the part of the Pirates.
“Brenna MacNair had the nice play with the backhand flip,” Bart said. “Brooke Figiel had the play where she caught the ball and threw the runner out at home. There are positive things to take away from the game.”
MacNair flashed the leather at second on multiple plays, including one where she ranged to her right and flipped to second.
The other was a fly to center that Figiel fired back in to catcher Olivia Pestridge on a rope for an out at the plate to end the bottom of the fourth inning.
Figiel’s throw was so accurate and quick that the play at the plate wasn’t even that close of a call. Pestridge applied the tag high as the runner was still upright and getting ready to go into her slide. That’s how quick Figiel’s throw came to the plate.
“We have to stay positive,” Bart said. “We need to work on the fundamentals, build the basics, bring that confidence back up and get back to a winning place.”
Softball heads to Burlington Township on Monday for a 3:45pm first pitch versus the Falcons. It will be the seventh straight road game to open the year for Cinnaminson.
“It’s always nice to get home and have that advantage, to play on your own field,” Bart said of the streak of games on the road to open the season.
