The Cinnaminson Police Department has been awarded a grant to purchase body cameras for its officers, according to NJ Attorney General Christopher Porrino.
Cinnaminson was awarded a $14,000 grant, which will cover 28 body cameras, according to the press release from Porrino’s office.
“We’ve made positive police-community relations a top priority in New Jersey through policies and programs that have been embraced by law enforcement and community stakeholders alike, including our efforts to promote the use of body cameras by police,” Attorney General Porrino said in the release.
“This new round of funding for body cameras will keep New Jersey in the vanguard nationally in using this technology, which promotes transparency in policing while protecting officers in their difficult and dangerous jobs.”
The funds for this round of grants comes from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (“JAG”) Program. The JAG funds are appropriated by Congress to the Department of Justice so states can run programs that prevent and control crime.
Governor Chris Christie and the State Attorney General’s Office announced $4 million in funding for body cameras using criminal forfeiture funds back in July of 2015.
Lt. Tim Young of the Cinnaminson Police Department said more information will be made available to the public following the January 23 township committee meeting.
