It was an incredibly busy week for Pirates sports teams and two of them (bowling and swimming) have been off for quite some time now due to winter break.
Boy’s basketball, girl’s basketball, winter track and wrestling all remained active over the break, putting up some big wins and performances. We take a look back at the week that was in Pirates sports for December 28 to January 3 in this week’s review.
We begin this week with boy’s basketball. The Pirates played just two games, but both of them were wins at the Collingswood Holiday Tournament. In the first round, the Pirates defeated high-scoring Salem 48-45 for the right to play in the title game.
In the championship round, the Pirates took on New Foundations Charter (PA) and exploded for a 68-55 victory over a team that was close to being a mirror image of Cinnaminson. The boys are now 4-0 on the season and resume play on Tuesday with an away game against Pennsauken Tech at 3:45pm.
Girl’s basketball also played in a tournament this past week, the Audubon Holiday Tournament, going 1-1 in their two games. In the opening round, the Pirates took down the host 42-26 after a dominating second half that saw the Pirates outscore the Green Wave 25-7.
In the championship round, the Pirates fell to Gloucester 32-24 after struggling to get shot to fall throughout the contest. With the loss, the Pirates are now 3-1 on the year and return to the court on Monday at home against Woodrow Wilson at 6pm.
Winter track participated in back-to-back events this week; Tuesday at the second SJTCA Meet of the season in Toms River and Wednesday at the Ocean Breeze Holiday Festival in Staten Island.
At Ocean Breeze, the Pirates came away with a couple of impressive finishes, seven PRs and a couple of top ten placements in Group 2. Winter track resumes its season on Thursday in Toms River at the third SJTCA Meet of the season.
Wrestling took part in just one event this past week, the Arthur O. Marinelli Tournament hosted by Egg Harbor Township High School. The Pirates came in sixth out of 13 teams with 91.5 points.
Heavyweight Keith Swartley was the only Pirate wrestler to wrestle in the finals, winning his bout by a 10-4 decision over Paul Valian of host Egg Harbor. Wrestling hits the mats again on Wednesday night at Westampton at 7pm.
