For the week ending May 24, this edition of the Pirates Athletes of the Week is a little lighter due to a couple of teams already seeing their seasons come to an end. We still have to hand out hardware for baseball, golf, softball, boy’s volleyball and both track and field programs.
Baseball: The honor this week is a difficult one because of all the stellar performances by the Pirates in a week in which the team went 4-0 with two playoff wins. We are going to have to issue the award to four players this week, with the honors going to starting pitcher Eddie Gore, starting pitcher Nick Holl, center fielder Nick Thevanayagam and outfielder/reliever Dominic Cicale.
Gore threw a complete game in the Pirates 2-1 victory over Pemberton for his third win of the season. The win also clinched a share of the Freedom Division title for the Pirates. Holl followed Gore’s performance with a complete game victory of his own in a 1-0 win over New Egypt. He won that game thanks to Cicale, who laced a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh down the left field line.
Thevanayagam recorded his 100th career varsity hit in the victory over Pemberton on Tuesday.
Softball: The honor for softball this week will also go to multiple players as the team honored its seniors prior to a 7-6 loss to Delran in extra innings. Starting pitcher Shannon Profy and right fielder Delani Pecchioli had an impact in tying the game to send it to extras on their big night. They also played a part in the Pirates opening-round win over Spotswood in the Central, Group 2 Tournament.
Golf: The award in golf goes to David Gall this week. Gall finished tied for third in the group tournament in which the team finished third in the state.
Boy’s Volleyball: The boy’s volleyball team played just one game this week, a 2-0 win over Camden Academy Charter on their senior night. The honors this week go to the team’s four seniors; Pete Selnek, Allen Barrett, Matt Burns and Alex Speegle.
Girl’s Track and Field: The girl’s squad has been competing in the Group 2 Sectionals this weekend. The award this week is handed to Taylor Clark, who set a new personal record with a 9’6″ and advanced to states.
Boy’s Track and Field: Along with the girls, the boys have been competing in the Group 2 Sectionals this holiday weekend. The honor this week goes to Steven Liu, who set a new school record in the triple jump and also won the SJ Group 2 Sectional with his jump of 44’11” to move to states.
