The Pirates Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 28 has arrived. See who takes home the honors this week in Pirates sports.

Boy’s Basketball: The honor this week, a 2-1 week for boy’s basketball, goes to senior Pat McCarthy. McCarthy had a hand in both of the Pirates victories this week. On Monday against Montgomery McCarthy hit a buzzer-beater to secure a 52-51 victory that completed a furious fourth quarter comeback for the Pirates. On Thursday, McCarthy hit two free throws with five seconds left on the clock to expand the lead to three points over Rancocas Valley. The Pirates held on to win 69-66.

Girl’s Basketball: The girl’s basketball team also went 2-1 this week with wins over Haddon Township and Willingboro. The lone loss came against Rancocas Valley in the regular season finale. The honor this week goes to senior Marisa DiLeo. DiLeo led the Pirates in scoring all three games and scored her 1,000th career point in the win over Willingboro on Tuesday. DiLeo is just the fourth female in school history to reach the milestone.

Swimming: In the final weekend of the swimming season, Lily Black broke her own school records once again. On Saturday at the Meet of Champions preliminaries Black set new records in the 500 freestyle and the 200 freestyle, qualifying for the finals in the 500 free on Sunday. Her times from Saturday were 5:09.67 and 1:56.42 in the 500 and 200, respectively. On Sunday, Black broke her own 500 free record again with a time of 5:07.80 to finish fifth in her heat and 13th overall. She is our Pirates Athlete of the Week for swimming.

Winter Track: In one of the final events of the winter track season (Eastern States is Tuesday), Tom Long and Mike Ungvarsky competed in the Meet of Champions in Toms River. Long finished 19th in the 800m with a time of 2:01.65 and Ungvarsky finished 14th in the 3200m with a time of 9:30.03. Both Long and Ungvarsky take home this week’s honor for winter track.

Wrestling: The Pirates sent nine wrestlers to the Region 7 Tournament at Robbinsville High School this week. Two wrestlers advanced to the semifinals and one, Keith Swartley, advanced to the finals. Swartley takes home this week’s Athlete of the Week after winning his second straight Region 7 title at heavyweight. His victory came via a 1-0 decision over Ryan Harper of Collingswood. Swartley will compete in Atlantic City at the State Tournament this coming weekend.
