With the start of the 2016 spring sports season at Cinnaminson High School we bring you the first Pirates Athletes of the Week for the week ending April 3. Without further adieu, here are the first honorees for the spring 2016 sports season.
Boy’s Lacrosse: Despite a tough start to the season with two double-digit losses, the Pirates are headed in the right direction in terms of numbers and players committed to this ever-growing sport. The first athlete of the week for boy’s lacrosse is Chris Jankowski. Jankowski scored the first goal of the season for the Pirates in a 15-1 loss on opening day to Lower Cape May. The boys are back in action Monday at Williamstown.
Boy’s Track and Field: This one is a no-brainer after the Pirates distance medley relay (DMR) team took first place for small schools at the Hall of Fame Relays in Maple Shade on Saturday morning. The team features Tom Long, Mike Ungvarsky, Max Adams and Riley Saint-Elien. The team finished with a time of 11:00.10. Boy’s track and field competes at the Bridgeton Relays on Saturday morning.
Boy’s Volleyball: Cinnaminson opened the season Friday afternoon with a 2-1 loss to Collingswood. The Pirates won the opening set 25-20, but lost the second set 25-22 and the third set 25-13 to drop the match. The honor this week goes to senior Pat McCarthy. McCarthy is one of just a few returning starters. McCarthy was instrumental in the Pirates victory in the first set and comeback effort in the second set that kept the score close. Cinnaminson returns to the court Monday vs Pennsauken Tech at home.
Girl’s Lacrosse: The Pirates opened the season 1-1 with a loss to Holy Cross and a win over West Windsor-Plainsboro South. The first honor of the year goes to Casey Joyce. Joyce scored five goals across the two games to lead the team in scoring. Joyce picked up her first in the loss to Holy Cross and four more in the win over West Windsor-Plainsboro South. Girl’s lacrosse hosts Moorestown Friends on Monday afternoon.
Girl’s Track and Field: Girl’s track and field competed Saturday at the Hall of Fame Relays in Maple Shade and their DMR team also came in first for small schools. The DMR team receives the first honor of the spring. The team consists of Olivia Rocks, Andrea Benites, Fiona Flynn and Madison Edwards. Girl’s track and field will compete at Lenape on Saturday.
Softball: During a 1-2 week the Pirates lost to Holy Cross 1-0 and Pennsville Memorial 4-0 before beating Buena 10-2. The latter two games were part of the Fred Powell Tournament hosted by Williamstown High School on Saturday. The athlete of the week for softball goes to Rebecca Martino. Martino pitched 4.1 innings in the win over Buena to pick up her first varsity victory. Martino allowed just two earned runs. Softball visits Northern Burlington on Tuesday.
