Our Meet the Candidates series concludes today with a profile of town committee candidate Howard “Bud” Evans, who is running unopposed.
District information for Cinnaminson voters can be found here.
Evans, who goes by Bud, is running for political office for the first time in his career.
He has been a resident of Cinnaminson for a little more than two years and has served in the armed forces for 29 years.
Evans has been a hockey coach for underprivileged youth in the past, while performing other charity and volunteer work. He moved to Cinnaminson from Limerick, Pennsylvania.
“When we did move here I got involved with the Cinnaminson Republican Club,” Evans told Cinn City News. “I was asked to make a speech about my military service. I got involved with Parks & Recreation. I thought why not me? Why shouldn’t I make a run for Cinnaminson? I love this place and the people here.”
“It’s a compulsion with me to serve. I’m active duty in the military (Intelligence Officer). The Air Force motto is “Integrity; service before self and excellence in all we do. That service before self aspect of my duties I talk to heart.”
Evans explained why he decided to run for township committee.
“For my own suffrage and for the people surrounding me, there’s no reason for taxes to be gauging in New Jersey.”
Evans explained what he thinks is so attractive for people who choose to move to Cinnaminson.
“It’s got a small town mentality. I’ve never considered myself a white collar guy. When I was young in my military career I had no intention of going to college. I always considered myself a Philadelphia, blue collar, nose to the grindstone kind of person.”
“I look at Cinnaminson as that kind of town. It gives me that kind of feeling. The parks are great. The sports organizations are great. The schools are great. The people are great. I would challenge anyone to find someone here who is stuffy.”
Evans wants people to understand what it is he will do early in his term on township committee.
“Initially, if you’re expecting me to walk in there and be a hardcharger, that’s not what I am going to do. I don’t exactly know what positions I will be put into as well as being a liaison to different areas in the township.
Evans also worked for 13 years in law enforcement.
“I had a break in active duty and served as a police officer in Radnor Township for 13 years. I’m kind of hoping I wind up in the public safety aspect and if that’s the case, I’m looking forward to ensuring the continued safety of the residents of Cinnaminson.”
“I want to make sure our law enforcement has the right tools to do the job. I want to ensure the township continues community-oriented policing and activities like the Cookout with Cops.”
Evans has considered running for political office in the past, but the Presidential race helped make his decision easier.
“I had thought about running before. Watching this election and what is happening in Congress right now, with the disconnect between the regular citizen and our government, it appears as though there is no government by the people for the people. It seems as though it is a government running by themselves for themselves. It angers me because that’s not the Constitution I fight and am willing to do for.”
Make sure you get out and vote on Tuesday, November 8.
