In what looked like it was going to be a game dominated by the Pirates (8-5-1), the girl’s soccer team dropped a 4-3 decision to Delran (9-6-2) on Tuesday afternoon.

Cinnaminson got off to a roaring start, scoring the game’s first goal just 59 seconds into the contest, but Delran had an answer for everything the Pirates did.

“We are a good team,” Digney said. “I thought we played well at Holy Cross. Early in the season I think it worked out for us because Holy Cross has those two good players and Delran has two nice players so it was almost like one game was practice for the next.”

Fiona Flynn opened the scoring for the Pirates, who scored all three of their goals in the first half.

“There is nothing I can take out of this game that is positive,” Digney said. “We’ve got the playoffs coming up. The brackets should be done soon, so we’ll know who we are playing and where we are playing.”

“We’re out of the league. We’re out of the Coaches Tournament. The only thing we’ve got going for us now is the playoffs. I think we’re good enough to make a run in the playoffs, but we’ve gotta have better days than today. That’s for sure.”

Delran answered less than six minutes later to tie the match off a goal from Brianna Taylor, but Miranda Sackner put Cinnaminson back in front, 2-1, with 30 minutes left in the half.

The Bears would tie the game at two less than three minutes later and then take their first lead of the game at 3-2 with 24:46 to go in the opening frame on the second and third goals from Taylor.

It took nine minutes for the Pirates to find the net to tie the game, but did so with 15:43 left on the clock when Alex Kane put one in off a corner kick from Amanda McHugh.

The game would remain tied at three at the break. Delran scored the eventual game winner with 21:58 left in the contest as Taylor netted her fourth of the day. Delran’s defense stood tall for the rest of the second half, limiting the Pirates chances to tie the game.

“I didn’t like the matchups at first, but I just felt like we were getting beat all over the field,” Digney said. “When the ball’s in your area, you gotta do your best job to win it.”

“There were times where there was 10 or 15 minutes in the game where we couldn’t win the ball. They were just stronger, faster, more physical and had more anticipation. We did a lot of watching today. Not a good game for us.”

Girl’s soccer returns to the field on Friday, October 23 with an away game against Pemberton at 3:45pm.

“I like to think I kinda coach like that,” Digney said. “That we are trying to play our best soccer over the last two weeks of the season. Today wasn’t the case. In the past, we’ve finished the season strong and made a nice run in the playoffs.”

“We’ve got Pemberton, R.V. and New Egypt. We hope to build some momentum there, so when we get into the first round we can roll from that.”
