In what turned out to be a windy, cloudy, cool afternoon, the Pirates hosted Northern Burlington in girl’s lacrosse. Cinnaminson recorded a 13-12 victory over the Greyhounds to move to 9-4 on the season.
“I think we needed this game to prove to ourselves that we are better than what we have been doing. We had a great game on Friday night, but not so good against Delran, and a lot was weighing on them (the girls),” head coach Laura Curran said. “They really proved to me that they wanted this win. They worked hard today.”
It was a see-saw affair, with Northern Burlington jumping out to a 1-0 lead less than one minute into the game. It would take a matter of one minute for the Pirates to tie the game when Julia Averill found the back of the net.
The Pirates took their first lead of the game seconds later when Grace Shallow scored the first of her team-leading six goals on the day.
Averill would add her second and final goal of the game to tie it at three early in the first half.
At halftime, the Pirates held a 7-6 lead thanks to two goals from Shallow with less than four minutes left to tie and then a goal from Shannon Forbes with 21.8 seconds left to grab the lead. That would not be the last time we would hear from Forbes with the clock winding down today.
“This team has so much heart and so many skilled players. When they all come together like that, they send a message to each other and when they put it all together, it’s a great game to watch and so fun to watch them play like that,” Curran said.
Northern quickly tied the game just 52 seconds into the second half and then took the lead one minute later.
The see-saw battle would continue throughout the second half until the Pirates scored four consecutive goals to take a three goal lead.
Northern took a 9-8 lead with 21:14 left in the second, but then the Pirates exploded. Shallow tied it at nine, Katie O’Connor put the Pirates up 10-9 and then Shallow and Forbes made it 11-9 and 12-9, respectively with less than six minutes left. It looked as if the Pirates had this thing in the books.
“We wanted to mentally get back to that point where we are on a winning streak,” Curran said. “We got a little comfortable in our game and we fixed a lot of things in our last couple practices. Our defense was starting to fall apart and we got it back together. The team as a whole connected today and proved that we are the team we know we can be.”
Northern Burlington had other ideas, scoring three unanswered goals to tie the game at 12 with 3:16 left.
The Pirates took the lead for good with 1:50 left when Forbes found the back of the net with her fourth of the game. The Pirates received timely saves from goalie Emily Brennan to preserve the victory.
“Our team is really good at knowing when to start getting into the game and we’re really good at knowing when it’s time to turn it on and getting it in our heads that it’s go time,” Forbes said.
The Pirates have now won three in a row.
“We work really hard in practice. Our thing is, it’s not about the team who win can every single game, but the team that can lose and fight back. That’s what we’re trying to do,” Shallow said following today’s victory.
Girl’s lacrosse returns to the field on Thursday, May 7 at 3:45pm when they travel to Pennsauken. Cinnaminson beat Pennsauken 16-4 earlier in the season at home.
