It was a beautiful day for a BCSL girl’s lacrosse contest and the Pirates took advantage of the nice weather with a 17-2 victory over host Maple Shade to get back in the win column on Tuesday.
“Once we talked after the RV game, take what we did well, they were very focused on Saturday,” head coach Laura Curran said. “And we saw a college game that day. It was exciting for them to see two great teams work together.”
Cinnaminson now sits at 6-3 on the season with a rematch against Holy Cross looming large on Friday.
The Pirates used a balanced attack to take down the Wildcats as seven different girls recorded at least one goal in the game.
“What I love to see is when we have six, seven, eight scorers,” Curran said. “Whereas the number of goals is really important, I also love to see that we had a number of scorers. In a situation where someone is not having a good day, somebody else can step up and score the goals.”
Jenna Mullin led the way with five and Julia Averill finished with four. Both Mullin and Averill had hat tricks prior to halftime.
“We thought we worked hard and knew we had to come off the loss to RV with a win,” Mullin said. “We focused on trying to advance our skills to the next level. For this game we wanted to focus on those skills and better ourselves for Friday looking towards Holy Cross.”
Other girls with multi-goal games included Lexi Colella (2), Casey Joyce (2) and Katie O’Connor (2). Alexa Parrish and Eilis Callaghan each had one.
“It’s really important (to spread it around) so that if one player gets face guarded we still have more players who can score,” Mullin said.
The Pirates jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Colella and Joyce. Maple Shade cut the deficit to 2-1 with 15:57 to play in the first half before the Pirates reeled off six straight goals to increase the lead to 8-1.
“Communication is one thing,” Curran said. “We’ve always been working on defense throughout the entire year. Today was our last practice of the week against girls that don’t always know the plays. We made sure we ran our plays correctly.”
Cinnaminson led 12-2 at the break and upped the lead to 17-2 before the final horn blew.
It was one of those games where everything went right for the Pirates, who were able to work on some new plays and tighten up the defense in preparation for the Lancers.
“We ran a new play today, minimized the turnovers, so going into Friday we can hopefully be more confident and do much better than the first time against Holy Cross,” Curran said.
Cinnaminson was also able to focus on fixing the mistakes the team made in the loss to Rancocas Valley on Friday.
“That’s the good thing about playing teams in our division twice,” Curran said. “We either get to prove ourselves again or redeem ourselves from the previous match.”
The Pirates have a couple of practice days ahead before another BCSL contest against Holy Cross on Friday, April 22 at 3:45pm.
“Transition. We’re going to work even harder than we did in the first game,” Mullin said. “We want to shut them down on defense better and run a couple more plays that we’ve created over the season.”
