Following two tough ties this week, the Pirates needed a victory on Friday afternoon when the Bordentown Scotties came to town. Cinnaminson fought hard in the second half to tie and win the game by a score of 2-1.

The Pirates are now 4-1-2 on the 2015 campaign.

The first half of the game was scoreless thanks in large part to goalie Lauren Friedrich, who made a handful of consecutive saves on corners just before halftime.

“She (Lauren Friedrich) has always worked hard,” head coach Gina Quaranta said. “Ever since she started as a freshman, she’s always just wanted to learn more about the position and do her best. She’s always asking questions and looking to improve. I’m really proud of her being our starting keeper.”

Bordentown got on the board first with 18:40 left in the second half on a goal from Abby Gunther, assisted by Anna Price.

Cinnaminson responded less than three minutes later to tie the game when freshman Maura Tumelty worked her way through the Scotties defense for the Pirates first goal of the game.

“I think the girls responded to that really well,” Quaranta said. “They impressed me with how positive they were staying and how they cheered on each other on even though we were down 1-0.”

With just 5:15 to go in the second half, the Pirates took the lead on an eventual game winner from Serafina Kennedy. The Pirates defense held strong for the final five-plus to take down Bordentown in an eventual 2-1 victory.

“This definitely feels great for us after a long week of three games with two ties and finally coming out with the win,” Quaranta said.

Friedrich made 10 saves for the Pirates, many of them from point-blank range. The Pirates defense was stellar from start to finish, allowing the one goal. It was just the second goal allowed by the defense in the last three games.

“We have really focused this week in practice having really tight defense no matter what was happening with the ball,” Quaranta said. “Even if it was halfway out, we were still trying to stay tight to the ball until it got all the way out of the defensive end. As far as the defensive corners go, they did a nice job of staying composed and being patient.”

Cinnaminson field hockey returns to the field on Monday, September 28 at 3:45pm when Florence comes to town. Cinn City Sports will have coverage of game. Follow us on Twitter for live updates.
