The third annual Cinnaminson Baseball Summer Slam Tournament begins tonight at Memorial Park and continues through Monday.

The championship games for all four age groups involved will take place on Monday night at various fields at Memorial Park.

The tournament features teams from Cinnaminson and surrounding towns in the U7, U8, U9, and U10 age groups.

“I go to tournaments all over the place and you kind of see the same teams,” Cinnaminson Baseball President Matt Kravil said. “This is more fresh and offers us a little more variety when it comes to opponents.”

U7 is machine pitch. U8 is the first year of kid pitch, while U9 and U10 are also kid pitch.

“We saw how much fun other towns had hosting these tournaments and we wanted our kids to enjoy a tournament of this size on their own fields,” Kravil said. “It’s a lot of work, but we really like it. It’s one of our main revenue generators for the program.”

This year’s tournament features 28 teams, the most to date, and the cap is 32 due to the number of fields at Memorial Park and those that have lights.

“Last year if we didn’t get an age group rained out we might’ve had two more,” Kravil said. “We ended up losing the U10 group because of rain.”

There are two games on the schedule tonight as the U8 Pal-Riv team takes on the U8 Makefield at 6pm on Field #5 and the U10 Cinnaminson team takes on the U10 Pal-Riv at 6pm on Field #1.

“You see the excitement from the younger kids because it’s their first year in the tournament,” Kravil said. “They get to wear the same uniform as the older kids in the program. They’re really siked about it.”

“The U8 team won the championship last year, so they want to go back and defend the title. The U10 team, this is their third year in the tourney, and they want to go out on a high note.”

Complete schedules for all four age levels in Summer Slam 2016 can be found at the bottom of this page.

“I want these kids to be exposed to more competitive baseball and I hope that this tournament fuels their hunger to come back for more,” Kravil said.

“I think that I speak for the whole organization with that. We want them to play more baseball. They’ll see this and they’ll tell their friends to come out for fall ball.”
