The boy’s lacrosse team opened the 2016 spring sports season at Cinnaminson High School on Wednesday morning by hosting Lower Cape May, falling 15-1.

These two teams met twice last year, with the road team victorious in each meeting.

The teams traded opportunities throughout the first six minutes of the game, but the Pirates could not find a way to get off a shot.

With 6:12 to go in the first Lower Cape May went up 1-0 and never looked back. The lead went to 5-0 by the end of the first and 10-0 by halftime.

“I hope they don’t come out flat again,” head coach Craig Angelini said of the team’s next game. “This is a very fast game and goals can be scored quickly.”

“They need to be ready to play from the start of the game. We need to play four quarters. Playing two quarters is not going to cut it at this level.”

Lower Cape May dominated all aspects of the game from faceoffs to ground balls to shots. It wasn’t until late in the second half that the Pirates finally put offensive pressure on Lower Cape May.

Cinnaminson’s lone goal of the game was scored by Chris Jankowski early in the third quarter. It made it a 10-1 game, but Lower Cape May would go on to score five more goals before the final horn sounded.

The Pirates played a much better second half compared to the first. Cinnaminson spent much more time in their opponent’s end compared to the first half. The Pirates also played better defense in the second half.

“I guess they started to realize this is a fast game,” Angelini said. “I’ve got a young team. I think they were shell shocked. It took them a little while to settle down. I’m glad they started to play a little harder in the second half.”

The Pirates get right back at it on Friday, April 1 with an away game against Holy Cross at 3:45pm. Cinnaminson split last season’s two meetings with Holy Cross.

In order to be successful Friday against Holy Cross, Angelini said, “They need to move the ball quickly and they need to work as a team.”
