The last time the Pirates took the field prior to Saturday morning’s makeup game against Rancocas Valley was one week ago. The result was a 14-4 loss, the fifth straight for the boy’s lacrosse program.
Cinnaminson tallied the first goal of the game, at 9:47 in the first quarter, when Ryan Bleistine found the back of the net.
It was the only lead the Pirates would have during the game. Rancocas Valley tied the game less than one minute later and then took the lead for good with 4:52 left in the opening quarter.
“We have young guys and I think they struggle with confidence. When they execute and play our system, they find success. But, I think they don’t fully understand game momentum, or how to control game momentum. We continually are working on it. I think their nerves get the better of them,” head coach Craig Angelini said.
The Red Devils would score 14 straight goals before the Pirates hit paydirt again.
Rancocas Valley led 11-1 at halftime.
The Pirates added three goals in the second half, two from Alex Artur and one from Tyler Simcoe, with all three coming in the fourth quarter.
Cinnaminson held Rancocas Valley scoreless in the fourth quarter and allowed just three goals to the Red Devils in the second half.
“Our systems work. It’s all execution and trying to pull them off. From a confidence standpoint, once they realized they had nothing to lose, they kind of got rid of their butterflies and started scoring goals. The challenge is to get them to play four quarters of lacrosse, not one or two.”
In the second half, frosh George Snedden got to see varsity time in net for the Pirates. He has not seen much time on the field of late due to junior varsity games being canceled.
“It’s been a struggle, especially in the real tight game,” Angelini said about getting guys time. “This game got opened up a little bit, so in the second half I went with a lot of other guys.”
Boy’s lacrosse returns to the field on Monday, April 27 at 3:45pm when they visit Holy Cross. Cinnaminson took down the Lancers on opening day by a score of 5-4.
