Things got off to a slow start on Wednesday night for the Pirates, but that did not deter them from the task in front of them; handing Pemberton their first loss of the season in the Patriot Division.

Wrestling did just that in a 43-18 come-from-behind victory over the Hornets as the Pirates move to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the Patriot.

“Our confidence is set so high because of the great season we had last year,” Mike Dunleavy said. “Everyone on our team gives it all their heart and we work really hard in the practice room.”

Box Score

Ethan Schuler dropped the opening bout of the night, putting Cinnaminson behind 6-0. JT Holt lost his bout 7-5 in three periods to put the Pirates down 9-0.

“We emphasize to our guys that if they train great, they’re going to wrestle great,” head coach Mike McConnell said.

Things began to take a turn when Joe Saxton won his bout to pull the Pirates within 9-4 of Pemberton. The Hornets won the 152-pound match to take a 15-4 lead before everything would come apart for Pemberton.

“We know that this year, coming out with pretty much the same team, we always work hard in practice and have the same confidence going into each match,” Joe Cody said. “We make each other better at practice each day. We get the workout we need to be successful in every match.”

Dunleavy took the mat at 160-pounds against Alex Rodriguez and quickly ended the bout in a pin just 23 seconds in pulling the Pirates within 15-10.

“I think it got the momentum change,” Dunleavy said of his quick pin. “It got everyone kind of pumped up and it set the tone for the rest of the match.”

“I told him (Dunleavy) to go out and be a senior,” McConnell said. “Mike going out there and getting that quick pin, definitely got the guys excited. Shaun comes and wins a big match at 182.”

Shaun Davilla’s 5-4 win over Davon Coleman pulled the Pirates within 18-13. The win by Davilla was the first of eight consecutive wins by the Pirates to overcome the Hornets for the victory.

After a win by Andrew Halecki to pull the Pirates within 18-16, Cody went to overtime (six periods) against Alex Cawley to take home a 2-1 victory and give Cinnaminson their first lead of the night, 19-18, that they would not relinquish.

“I knew going into that match there was no way I was walking off the mat with a loss,” Cody said. “I knew all the work I put in would payoff in the end. I needed to continue with the high energy during the match and get the most out of it to score that last point I needed.”

“Joe (Cody) is just a really tough kid,” McConnell said. “He’s a good athlete and a physical wrestler. He’s great up top. He’s going to come into his own this year.”

Keith Swartley won his heavyweight bout by forfeit and then TJ Emanuel, Isaiah Elias, Kevin Schoch and Jarrod Averill won their bouts to finish the match. Elias and Averill won their bouts via pin.

The Pirates return to the mat on Saturday with a home quad at 9am. Cinn City Sports will have coverage so be sure to follow on Twitter for live updates.
