The Pirates wrestling team will begin its quest for a second consecutive sectional crown tonight at 7pm when it hosts Patriot Division rival Delran for the opening round of the South, Group 2 Tournament. Here is our wrestling first round playoff preview.

#6 Delran: 14-12

#3 Cinnaminson: 15-3

How They Got Here

The Pirates come into this match following a tri-match split with Shawnee and Collingswood on Saturday.

Cinnaminson took down Group 5 Shawnee, but could not get anything going versus Collingswood, which is the one-seed in the Pirates playoff bracket this year.

Cinnaminson won the Central, Group 1 Tournament last year, but has been moved to South, 2 for this season.

A loss to Collingswood prior to the post-season will not deter this team from its goal; winning another sectional crown.

The Pirates have a 2-1 record against teams in their bracket. The two wins came against tonight’s opponent Delran and the four-seed Haddonfield. Some believe that the Pirates win over Haddonfield prevented the Bulldawgs from securing the one-seed.

Cinnaminson’s win over Delran was on the road and came in the final three bouts of the match. It was the second win in the Patriot for the Pirates, who would finish the regular season 4-0 and earn a second straight division title.

Delran is 0-3 this year against teams in the bracket, having lost all three matches right in a row to Clayton, Cinnaminson and then Collingswood.

The closest of the three matches was with Cinnaminson. The losses to Clayton and Collingswood came at 57-15 and 61-10 scores.

The Bears finished 2-2 in the Patriot Division this year, losing to the Pirates and Pemberton and beating Willingboro and Bordentown.

Delran has been a streaky team this year, going on two win streaks of four matches or more, while also enduring a five-match losing streak.

The Bears come into tonight’s playoff match having lost four of their last five. Their lone win was against Moorestown 51-27 on February 2.

Delran lost in the first round of the Central, Group 2 Tournament last season as the three-seed to #6 Middlesex 39-35.
