All the Pirates needed to do Wednesday afternoon against Willingboro was win the match in order to claim the program’s second straight Patriot crown. The Pirates won handily, 78-0, to move to 14-2 overall and 4-0 in the Patriot.
“We find something different to work on everyday in the room,” head coach Mike McConnell said. “We’ll spend some time doing instruction, making sure we’re working on the right techniques. We focus on conditioning and making sure the guys are in the right place on the mat.”
With a mix of forfeits and pins, the Pirates made quick work of the Chimeras, who are now 0-11 on the year.
Cinnaminson accepted six forfeits on the day and pinned in the eight bouts that took place.
“We make sure everyone’s doing everything they’re supposed to do,” senior Mike Dunleavy said. “We make sure they keep their energy up during practice.”
The match started at 220 pounds with Joe Cody accepting a forfeit. Keith Swartley then faced Gregory Reed at 285 pounds, pinning Reed in 1:36 and the Pirates were well on their way to another Patriot crown.
“I think a lot of the guys are starting to see that the season is most of the way over and they don’t see a lot of time left to get better,” McConnell said. “The guys have a lot of goals for the post-season in mind.”
The division title is the fifth for the program since 2009.
“I want to win states. That’s the big goal, obviously,” Dunleavy said. “Most importantly, we gotta beat Collingswood.”
Cinnaminson has a couple of days off before they take part in a quad hosted by Collingswood on Saturday morning. Collingswood is also the one-seed in the Pirates bracket for the state tournament (South, Group 2).
In attendance will also be Shawnee and Absegami.
“I am happy that we have this big, tough quad late in the season because we’ve had a lot of time to get better,” McConnell said about Saturday’s quad.
“A lot of our younger guys have become a lot more seasoned. I’m hoping that experience will translate into saving points where we can, pulling a few upsets and coming up with some wins there.”
Saturday will provide the Pirates with a good point of reference for where they stand among some of South Jersey’s best wrestling programs after already taking down Haddonfield.
Saturday will also help the Pirates prepare for Monday night’s first round playoff match with rival Delran, whom they defeated 37-33 earlier this year on the road.
“I’m expecting to come out and win,” Dunleavy said. “We’re going to go out, wrestle our hardest, and we’re going to win.”
