The weather has not been ideal to start the golf season.
The gap in the schedule from the opening match to today’s was long.
But none of that mattered for the Pirates, who moved to 2-0 with a 154-168 win over Burlington Township on Tuesday under cloudy skies and falling temperatures.
First-year golf head coach Bret Jenkins knows that the weather has not been ideal, but is lucky to have die-hard golfers on the team.
“We’re very luck that these guys are die-hard golfers, so regardless of the weather we have been out here. We were out here maybe five or six times in March when it was in the 40’s. We probably got eight rounds altogether in March and now we’ve added two matches. These guys are all about golf and they have figured out some way to play or hit balls somewhere.”
Pirates golf did get the chance to compete in the Garden State Cup at Blue Herron Pines West on Monday, finishing 8th as a team out of more than 20 of the best schools in the state.
“Just to be invited to that is a great honor and then to finish eighth among all these big-name schools and top prep schools. I think it is a huge confidence booster and I think it makes them realize they can compete with anybody.”
Senior David Gall added, “That was a good score for us, a good finish. We know we have the talent to compete with any team out there and some teams now know who we are who never knew us before.”
The Pirates are younger this year, but have a group of golfers back who were on the sectional title team in 2014. Despite the 2-0 record and the lofty goals, the Pirates refuse to get ahead of themselves.
“I think everyone is excited. They cannot wait to get another match in. We have another huge tournament on Monday, the BC Open. Hopefully we can start playing 3 or 4 times per week and keep the momentum going that we have,” Jenkins said.
Gall was the low-scorer for the Pirates on Tuesday. He finished one-under par with a 36. Gall knows this team can go places, and wants to help put Cinnaminson on the map.
“Last year we made it to states after winning the sectional title. We have a very young team, but we should be able to do it again, then hopefully go to states and have a better finish than third, like last year.”
Pirates golf takes to the links again on Thursday, April 16 when they visit Bordentown Regional at 3:45pm.
When asked about lulls in the schedule, Gall explained how the golf team prepares for upcoming matches.
“We talk about who we have next, how we have to beat them, who their strong points are and what ours are and then what to do to show them we are the better team.”
