The 2015 Pirates softball season opened on Thursday at home with a 4-1 loss to the Northern Burlington Greyhounds.
Northern Burlington jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Pirates never put their heads down.
Even though it was the first inning, of the first game of the season, many teams would have hung their heads and sleepwalked through the rest of the game after falling behind 2-0 early.
Not this team.
Not these Pirates.
Why?
It is a testament to Head Coach Tracy Bart and to the leaders on this team.
“They fought hard. They stayed positive the entire game. That’s what you want out of your team. It didn’t matter if it was 2-0, 4-0, 4-1, they worked hard and it showed,” Coach Bart said.
One of those leaders, senior Shannon Profy, took the loss today in a complete game effort.
“She’s (Shannon) is going to be a big part of our success. When we have steady pitching on the mound, and get the bats going, it’s a recipe for a good season.”
The bats started to come alive late in the game, which accounted for the Pirates lone run of the contest. Cinnaminson recorded only two hits on Thursday, but scorched quite a few balls.
“We have some young kids in the lineup. A couple of freshmen and sophomores in the lineup. It is the first time they are seeing pitching like this, so it might take them a couple of games to adjust, but they will get there.”
Before the Pirates take the field for their next game, against Bordentown, Coach Bart would like her players to focus on their defense.
“We did have a couple of errors in the field. If you take those errors out, those baserunners don’t get on and it makes a difference in the game.”
The Pirates are home on April 7 at 3:45 for their second game of the season when the Bordentown Scotties pay a visit to Cinnaminson.
