The Marketplace at Cinnaminson is set to get a much-needed facelift as Walmart upgrades its store along Route 130 this coming spring.

The Walmart expansion was approved back in 2010 by township committee, but has been stalled in court by litigation filed by the United Food and Commercial Workers’ Union.

The plans for the Marketplace at Cinnaminson include a facelift to the facade for the buildings.

The biggest news is that Walmart will be adding a grocery to its location. Even though Walmart already has a grocery section, the work will make it an individual grocery.

“We approved an expansion in Walmart, where they are going to have a grocery,” Mayor Anthony Minniti said. “They are going to completely remodel the entire Marketplace at Cinnaminson. Walmart will be renovated to the company’s new prototype.”

Minniti said that the company is going in front of the township now for work permits.

“What makes this such a great story is that Walmart is what got redevelopment going in Cinnaminson,” Minniti said. “Mike Minton was part of hre group that brought Walmart in. They brought Walmart in and it was during a time when everybody said retail doesnt work on route 130.”

The addition of the grocery for Walmart will not affect current stores Modell’s and Payless. The expansion at Walmart will occur into the current garden center.

Minniti said that Delran has tried to lure Walmart to its town, specifically to the empty shopping center at Route 130 and Chester Avenue, but now Walmart is reinvesting in itself here.

“Walmart is choosing to stay here and is investing in updated facilities. So, they are here for the next 10 to 20 years. Businesses are coming here, investing, becoming successful and reinvesting. In previous days, stores would become successful here and then move to a new location on 73 or 38.”

Minniti credits the construction of the Cinnaminson Walmart for what came next in Delran years ago.

“Everything that happened in Delran at Hartford Corners happened after our Walmart. Bringing Walmart here helped others take us somewhat seriously.”

Minniti said Walmart was approved by the township in 1997.

“The fact that it’s our first development, we approved them in ’97 and now they are redoing their site to remain here. It’s just such a great story for Cinnaminson.”

  1. Do we know if anything will happen with the rest of the stores there do to the grocery expansion? I assume they will all stay and just the facades will just be updated with Walmart. I personally can’t wait until the grocery comes in, every Walmart I’ve been to with a separate grocery has been excellent.

    • Hi Phil. Thanks for reading. It has been confirmed to me by Mayor Minniti that the other stores will remain. The plans are for Walmart to expand into their current outdoor section. The entire Walmart will be redone to match the company’s new prototype and the rest of the project includes the facelift to the facade of the building.
