19-win season

Following two straight losses, to Moorestown and Sterling, girl’s volleyball was in need of a win prior to their quad meet on Saturday morning. They took care of business on Friday afternoon with a 2-0 victory against Camden Charter. The Pirates are now 2-2 on the young season.

Box Score

Cinnaminson won the first set 25-12 and the second set 25-5. Even though the Pirates were not overly challenged today, they still got the chance to work on a few different things, especially serving.

“After yesterday’s loss (Sterling), it is nice to have a win like this,” head coach Sara Skvir said. “Especially after how we lost yesterday, starting both games with the lead, and in the middle of the games giving up points. It is a good confidence booster. Hopefully it carries into tomorrow’s quad match.”

In the first set, girl’s volleyball never trailed the Cougars. Their largest lead of the game of 13 points came at 20-7 and at 25-12, the final score.

The opening serve of the first set, from Cinnaminson’s Gia Trzaska, went as an ace and it was definitely a sign of things to come for the Pirates.

“At first it was hard to adjust to the pressure of being the first one up, but I’ve adjusted better to that and now I am used to it and I hit my spots more now,” Trzaska said.

Coach Skvir pointed out after the Pirates first win of the season that she would have Trzaska start each match in the server’s position.

“She’s been kind of hitting the same spots from our first game of the season,” Skvir said. “A lot of our other girl’s serves have improved, but Gia will continue to be our main server. Serving is an area where we want to excel. In the past couple of games we have had too many service errors.”

“Today we didn’t have as many so I am hoping this becomes the new trend. Christina Strough has picked up on her serves and has been a really decent server the last couple of days.”

With the first set remaining close for a good portion early on, the Pirates put it away with 11 straight points to build a 20-7 lead before eventually going on to win 25-12.

In the second set, the Pirates trailed just once, 2-1. After Camden Charter tied the second set at three, the Pirates reeled off seven straight points to build a 10-3 lead. The closest the Cougars would get again was within six points, at 10-4, before Cinnaminson put up nine consecutive points to extend the lead to 19-4.

The Pirates ended the second set on a six-point run to win 25-5 and secure the 2-0 match victory. The 20-point differential at the end of the game was the largest lead of the second set, and of the match, for the Pirates.

Skvir pointed out that she hopes the strong play of the team from Friday carries over into Saturday’s quad match.

“During the second set, I think it was the second or third point, Strough hit the ball really hard and it landed outside the lines. I said, ‘that’s how we need to hit.’ It’s little things like that they were working on today. I hope it carries over into tomorrow and next week against some stronger teams.”

Cinnaminson girl’s volleyball turns right around to play in a quad match on Saturday morning at 9am hosted by Moorestown High School.
