The 2014 season was a strong one for the Pirates, posting a 4-1 record, with the lone loss coming to Delran for the division title. The Pirates lost the meet by a lone point, which head coach Derek Moore said is tough to do in a track meet.

“That’s probably how it will end up going again this year, us and Delran for the division title. I don’t know if anyone else will be close.”

The Pirates were very young in 2014, but many of those girls will return in 2015 after winning varsity letters.

“We have gained a few freshmen too, who are pretty talented, but that also remains to be seen once they get onto the track for the first time in a competitive situation,” Moore said.

Moore said that having a bunch of younger kids on the track, who took to it early and were eager to learn, helped encourage others to come out and join the program.

As the team looks toward 2015, Moore said distance and the sprints and jumps will be the strongest areas of the team.

“I think our weights right now are young. We are waiting for someone to step up and take control of that like over the past years. We’ve had Faith Blamon, who throws at Monmouth now and Kristen Kozak, who was a really good thrower. But, I think right now our sprinting and our jumping and distance sides are probably going to be our strongest two. We will have to make up the difference with the young kids up on the hill.”

Leadership has been coming along well for the Pirates heading into the 2015 regular season.

“I had a lot of the freshmen girls last year in the winter and they were eager to learn last year. These girls last year wanted to learn how to hurdle, which kind of gets everybody else saying, ‘If they can do it, I can do it.’ So, then everybody wants to do it.”

The Girl’s Track and Field team opens their 2015 schedule with a meet on Saturday, April 4 at Maple Shade for the Hall of Fame Relays.
