The Pirates girl’s soccer team is coming together at the right time as we move deeper into October and closer to the post-season. A 6-1 victory over Bordentown (9-2) on Saturday morning showcased how well this team works together.
“I give a lot of credit to the upperclassmen and their leadership,” head coach Matt Digney said. “When they were young players maybe they experienced times when it wasn’t so neat and clean.”
“I think they did a good job of helping bring a different culture into the team as far as it’s not a me thing. It’s a we thing. The girls seem to believe it. Chemistry is tough to coach. You either have it, or you don’t sometimes, and I think we have good chemistry this year.”
Cinnaminson has now scored six goals in two consecutive games.
There were five different goal scorers for the Pirates (7-2-1), who dominated roughly 75 of the 80 minutes played today and all 40 minutes of the second half.
“We don’t have any one player that a team needs to focus on,” Digney said. “We have four girls that have two-goal games this year. We always depend on a good, consistent defense, a team defense. Fortunately, the games that we’ve played well, we’ve had that. We’ve had one or two girls step up, not the same girl, but it works for us.”
The Scotties opened the scoring with 28:42 left in the first half after Cinnaminson put a couple of shots on goal in the other end, hitting the post once.
“We work so hard for this,” Fiona Flynn said. “We train really hard. We knew when the first goal went down, we knew we had to work harder.”
Despite trailing 1-0, the Pirates did not panic, but instead played even harder. Flynn tied the game four minutes after Bordentown took the 1-0 lead.
“Strong start,” Digney said. “We hit the post early, had a couple good chances early. I thought we got almost too offensive. They countered, got behind us, and got the goal. We responded really well. We didn’t hang our heads, like we’ve done in the past. We were able to get right back at them and get that goal.”
Alex Kane picked up the eventual game winner with 19:33 left in the first half, giving the Pirates a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish en route to their seventh win.
“We have a lot of fast and technical players, so we get the ball up the field, work it across the field, outside to inside and work to get it in goal,” Kane said.
A little over two minutes later the Pirates went up 3-1 when Flynn deposited her second goal of the game. Miranda Sackner got into the scoring at 4:23 to make it 4-1 and Casey Joyce picked up the Pirates fifth goal of the first half with 2:49 left before the break.
It was a scoreless second half until there was 3:04 left on the clock. The Pirates beat the Scotties defense with a two on one going to goal. Kelly Kane unleashed a shot that was deflected, but the rebound was deposited into the net by Maddie Parrish to make it 6-1 Cinnaminson.
“Coach Digney’s main thing is getting the ball inside and out to our outside mids,” Flynn said. “Looking for the forward runs all the time so we can cut it and cross it. We worked on finishing in practice yesterday. We just have to finish the ball. I think we get the ball up the field just fine; it’s the final third that we have to work on more.”
The Pirates certainly excelled in finishing the ball on Saturday morning.
Girl’s soccer returns to the field on Tuesday, October 13 at 3:45pm with an away game against Moorestown. The Pirates lost this year’s first meeting with the Quakers, 3-2.
