The Lady Pirates fell in overtime today to Woodrow Wilson after a back-and-forth battle in the first round of the South Jersey Invitational. The final score was 54-49, making Cinnaminson’s record for the season 3-2.
The Pirates started the game off with a solid effort on offense, scoring 18 points in the first quarter alone. Senior Marisa Dileo tallied up 10 points in the first 8 minutes of play.
Woodrow Wilson’s offense had a strong response during the second quarter. The Lady Tigers scored 12 points in the second quarter, allowing them to take the lead. The score was 27-25 at halftime in favor of Woodrow Wilson.
The Lady Pirates tallied up 12 points during the third quarter, never really letting the Lady Tigers to acquire a big lead. At the start of the fourth quarter, Woodrow Wilson still held the lead at a score of 40-37.
The Pirates scored 7 points in under 3 minutes during the fourth quarter, snagging the lead with a little over a minute left in the game with a score of 47-42.
Six of Cinnaminson’s 11 points in the fourth quarter were due to three consecutive baskets by junior Tori Robinson. She talked to Cinn City Sports after the game about the Pirates’ plan for offense after a low-scoring loss to Gloucester last week.
“We are just trying to slow it down and to set up plays and get good shots,” Robinson said.
Woodrow Wilson fought back to make the previous 5-point differential only a 2-point differential. By making two free throw shots, the Lady Tigers were able to tie the game up with less than a minute remaining.
Going into overtime, the score was 48-48. Unfortunately, Cinnaminson answered Woodrow Wilson’s six-point effort with only one point off of a free throw shot made by sophomore Kelly Kane.
If Cinnaminson sunk every shot from the foul line in overtime alone, the Pirates would have won by one point. Head coach Bret Jenkins noted the girls’ difficulty with free throws tonight.
“Last game we really struggled from the free throw line shooting. Unfortunately, we didn’t do much better today,” he said. “We missed 18 free throws in the second half and overtime.”
