Following an impressive win over Group 3 Cumberland on Tuesday, the Pirates traveled to Medford Tech for a Freedom Division game on Friday night and took care of business with a 61-24 victory.

Girl’s basketball now boasts a 10-2 overall record and a 5-0 mark in the Freedom as they sit atop the standings.

“The division is a big deal to these girls,” head coach Bret Jenkins said. “They know when we have division games.”

“They know the importance of winning every game leading up to having to play Bordentown and Holy Cross on the road. They know how important it is to take care of all the other games leading up to those two.”

Cinnaminson jumped out to a 7-0 lead before holding a 23-3 lead after one quarter. The Pirates led 36-10 at the break and 51-17 after three before winning 61-24.

Senior Marisa DiLeo led all scorers with 23 points, 15 of them coming from beyond the arc. Fiona Flynn was the only other Pirate to score in double figures as she added 10. All told, nine Pirates scored at least two points in the victory.

Jenkins was able to get his starters plenty of rest Friday while also seeing what some of the younger players had to offer the team.

“I thought Tina Harrell played really well defensively,” Jenkins said. “Maddie Parrish, who’s been playing  well for us, hit two huge three’s against Cumberland.”

“She doesn’t always get a ton of time, but out there today she hit a big three late in the game. Only being a freshman, that’s very impressive.”

It has been a good week so far for the Pirates, who took down Cumberland 50-48 on Tuesday. It was just the second loss of the season for the Colts.

Flynn and DiLeo were the leading scorers against Cumberland with 17 and 14 points, respectively, with the Pirates connecting on six shots from three-point range.

The win over Cumberland was a big one for the Pirates when it comes to power points and helped the Pirates prepare for the test they will face on Saturday at home against Northern Burlington.

“I was a little worried coming off the hour and 15 minute bus ride because we hadn’t had a game that far yet this year,” Jenkins said. “I wasn’t sure how they’d react. I was really impressed with the moxie and confidence they showed out on the court.”

“Cumberland was a very good team, 13-1, a Group 3 school and we knew the ramifications and the amount of power points that were up for grabs. We really wanted to go out there and win that one.”

The Greyhounds are 8-8 overall, but are tied for first in the Patriot Division at 5-1. Northern Burlington took the lone matchup with the Pirates last season, 39-29.

“Every year it’s a battle against them. They beat Delran by three on the road,” Jenkins said. “They’re well-coached and every year they give us a battle.”

“They are a very good team. Solid. They have a bunch of players and two major scorers. They have a scorer from the outside and another scorer that’s a slasher. Another Group 3 school and they’re on top of the Patriot right now.”
