Game coverage for Wednesday, April 6 features Pirates softball at Riverside, which means this contest is the subject of today’s Gameday Focus.

When: Wednesday, April 6 at 3:45pm.

Where: Riverside

Cinnaminson: 1-3

Riverside: 1-1

The Pirates opened the 2016 season with a 1-0 loss at Holy Cross. Cinnaminson recorded just three hits in the loss, two from starting pitcher Rebecca Proctor, who struck out six on the mound.

Cinnaminson took part in the Fred Powell Tournament over the weekend, going 1-1 with a 4-0 loss to Pennsville Memorial and a 10-2 win over Buena.

The Pirates took on Northern Burlington Tuesday, dropping a 2-1 contest in which they were held to four hits. Despite recording just four hits, the Pirates picked up some strong at bats throughout the game.

“The pitching and defense was solid.” head coach Tracy Bart said. “The girls had some great at bats at the plate. We are looking to hit the holes to move the baserunners.”

Riverside is 1-1 on the year with a win against Willingboro 17-0 on Tuesday and a 2-1 loss to Delran to open the season. The Rams scored their 17 runs against Willingboro on just eight hits. No player recorded more than one hit apiece.

Brianna Fritz went five innings for the win. She allowed two hits and struck out nine batters.

These teams met once in 2015 in Cinnaminson. The Pirates were leading 7-5 in the top of the seventh when Riverside scored four times to take a 9-7 lead.

The Rams were able to hold on in the bottom of the inning for the come from behind victory. Coach Bart told us what the girls learned from that loss last year.

“We learned that you have to stay focused and keep the intensity up for all seven innings. It doesn’t matter if you are winning or losing.”

Fielding was a season-long issue for the Pirates in 2015, committing 30 errors as a team. Coach Bart focused on defense during the preseason and she has noticed a difference through the first four games of 2016.

“In the four games that we have played, our defense has been solid and kept us in games.”
