When: Tuesday, April 5 at 3:45pm.

Where: Riverton Country Club – Highland Avenue.

Cinnaminson: 0-0. 15-0 in 2015.

New Egypt: 0-0. 2-11 in 2015.

Today marks the season opener for both the Pirates golf team and New Egypt. You can read our 2016 golf season preview right here.

Golf is one of the final programs to get going at Cinnaminson High School along with baseball and boy’s tennis as all three open their 2016 campaigns today. Baseball and tennis have suffered rainouts.

Head coach Bret Jenkins is not concerned with starting late because almost all other golf programs are getting underway today in the area.

“No I’m not too worried about it because all the golf teams are in the same boat. Today is also New Egypt’s first match, so it shouldn’t affect us too much.”

Jenkins has been pleased with how focused his golfers have stayed during the month of March and into early April despite not competing in matches that count towards their record. He also credits the good weather in March that helped the team prepare for today’s opening match with New Egypt.

“Even though we haven’t had a match that has counted, the guys are still playing and keeping themselves ready to go. It was a great March in terms of weather, and we were able to play more than a normal month of March.”

Cinnaminson is coming off the first-ever undefeated regular season in program history (15-0) and the program’s first-ever BC Open title.

The program lost some impressive golfers to graduation, but the majority of the top six this year saw time in varsity matches last year on the links.

The Pirates defeated New Egypt in the lone meeting between the two schools by a score of 155-211 in last season’s opener. David Gall finished with a match-low 37 as the Pirates had the top three finishers.

Matt Haddon and Tim Jones both shot 38. Greg Shiffer and Josh Elder shot 42 and Zack Howard shot 43.

Jones, Shiffer, Elder and Howard are all in the top six this season. They will be joined by TJ Emanuel and Nick Aninos.

New Egypt went 2-11 last season, beating Pemberton and Bordentown. New Egypt returns its entire top six from last year in Mark Dempsey, Tim Blomgren, Derek Krum, Jeff Sakimura, Jeremy Barkalow and Jack Lyons.

Jenkins offered the key to winning the 2016 season opener today.

“As long as the guys go out and play their game then we should be fine. As long as they aren’t trying to do too much out there with it being the first match, then I have all the confidence that they’ll post a low score.”

Cinn City Sports will have coverage of golf vs New Egypt this afternoon. Check Twitter later today for individual scores and a final score and then Cinn City Sports for a full recap with interviews.
