Pirates 2015 Recap

The 2015 season was quite an exciting one for the field hockey program.

Cinnaminson went 10-6-3 and 5-4-1 in the Patriot. There were exciting games up and down the schedule, no matter the outcome, including a thriller in the playoffs.

The Pirates advanced to the semifinals of their sectional tournament with an incredible win on penalty strokes against Gloucester in the second round.

It took nine rounds of strokes after two scoreless overtime periods to determine a winner; a best-of-five (which was tied) and then four sudden death strokes.

Keeper Lauren Friedrich was put on the spot to make one final save after the Pirates scored to take a 2-1 lead. Friedrich was a brick wall during the stroke rounds, allowing only one goal.

The Pirates had some impressive wins in 2015, including a season opening win over rival Holy Cross, a 1-0 win over Northern Burlington and a 3-2 defeat of New Egypt in overtime.

Cinnaminson tallied six shutouts last season, including one that came in a 0-0 tie with Pemberton.

Pirates 2016 Outlook

The 2016 season looks bright for the Pirates, who graduated a small number of players from last year’s team.

A large number of players gained experience in 2015 as freshmen and sophomores, and head coach Gina Quaranta hopes that experience helps this season.

Rivalry with Delran

The Pirates rivalry with Delran will be renewed this afternoon with the season opener for both teams.

Delran took both contests with Cinnaminson last season by scores of 3-0 and 1-0.

The 1-0 loss was a heartbreaker on the Pirates home field. The game was tied with under a minute remaining in regulation before Rebecca Howard scored with two seconds left.

The last four games between these two teams have resulted in shutouts, including a 1-0 win for the Pirates in 2014.

Delran 2015 Recap

The Bears enjoyed a 14-5-1 season last year and a trip to the playoffs for a fifth straight season.

Delran went 9-1 in Patriot play to win the division.

The Bears fell in the second round of the Central, Group 2 Tournament to Ocean Township 2-1 in overtime.

Delran was led by Alexis Rider, who scored a Burlington County high 26 goals last season.

Check back today at 3:45pm for live updates from the game at the top of this post.
