Game coverage today features Pirates baseball vs Delran at 3:45pm for a Patriot Division contest. That means the contest is featured in our Gameday Focus, an in-depth look at the game.
When: Wednesday, April 13 at 3:45pm
Where: Cinnaminson
Cinnaminson: 1-2, 1-0 Patriot
Delran: 2-1, 0-1 Patriot
Cinnaminson will look to bounce back after an 11-2 loss at Haddonfield on Monday when they take the field versus Patriot Division rival Delran today.
Dominic Cicale took the loss on the mound Monday as the Bulldogs scored eight runs in the first three innings, including a four-run second inning. The Pirates offense was held to two runs on six hits and the defense committed three errors.
“We didn’t do a good job at being patient at the plate,” head coach Kevin Merrill said. “Their guy, his curveball, he threw it enough where we got antsy and started swinging at pitches. I think being down early in a game, the guys started to press a little bit. We talked about that. You can’t bring it all back in one swing. Stay within yourselves.”
The Pirates are 1-0 in the Patriot after defeating Bordentown 10-0 on Friday. In the game versus the Scotties the Pirates pounded out 10 hits and did not commit an error on defense.
“The approach at the plate Monday was not as sharp as it was against Bordentown,” Merrill said. “Part of it might have been that Bordentown is a league rival. Haddonfield was just a power point game. The focus wasn’t quite there like it was against Bordentown. We were a lot more inconsistent on the mound.”
Cinnaminson faced Delran three times in 2015, coming out victorious all three times, including once in the playoffs by a 5-4 score.
The playoff victory over Delran was secured with a four-run fourth inning that ended the scoring for either team. Brandon Staub threw a complete game, allowing just three earned runs on 10 hits. He walked one and struck out three.
Five different hitters drove in a run as Nick Thevanayagam went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored. Jimmy Cicale and Travis Pewor both went 2-for-4.
The last time the Pirates lost to Delran was in the 2014 season, 11-6 on May 9. It was the second meeting of the season between the teams. Cinnaminson had already won the first.
Delran comes into today at 2-1 after a 5-4 victory over Pennington on Monday afternoon. The Bears have also defeated Rancocas Valley and lost to Patriot rival Holy Cross.
“Delran is a rival. We want to beat them every single time in every sport,” Merrill said. “That attitude and mentality doesn’t change. I don’t think it would ever be an issue for any of our teams any year would have a problem getting up for a big game like Delran.”
The Bears win over Rancocas Valley was the program’s first in at least seven years.
The loss to Holy Cross saw the Bears offense get held to one run on five hits. All the scoring was done in the first three innings for both teams. Delran committed two errors in the loss.
Senior Brandon Staub will get the ball today against the Bears for his second start of the season, both against Patriot rivals.
