It finally looks as though Cinnaminson baseball will open their home schedule today when Bordentown visits for a 3:45pm Patriot Division contest. It is time to take a look at baseball vs Bordentown, so here is our Gameday Focus.

When: Friday, April 8 at 3:45pm.

Where: Cinnaminson High School.

Cinnaminson: 0-1

Bordentown: 1-1

The Pirates opened the 2016 season at Northern Burlington on Tuesday, dropping the game by a score of 14-5.

“Northern Burlington is a good hitting team. Our guys battled. They fought to the end. That’s what I’m proud of,” head coach Kevin Merrill said. “To have the seniors keep everyone in the game and battle to the end, that’s what I like to see from the guys. That’s a positive I can take from that game. We had base runners in almost every inning.”

Cinnaminson was scheduled to open the year at the Rohrer Baseball Tournament hosted by Haddon Township last weekend, but rain washed out those games.

The Pirates picked up just five hits in the loss, one each for Mike McAndrews, Mike Bednarek, Nick Mahoney, Joe Cody and Brandon Staub. None went for extra bases.

“We were getting opportunities. I thought that being the first game, we still did a good job of getting base runners and working at-bats,” Merrill said. “I thought we did a pretty decent job for a young team. If that’s a sign of things to come, being patient and trying to attack in certain counts, then we will be ok.”

Cinnaminson went 6-2 in the Patriot Division last season, claiming a share of the title with Holy Cross. One of those two losses came against the Scotties.

“The message every single year is it doesn’t matter what their record is, how many guys were lost to graduation, what games they played this week or who threw this week,” Merrill said. “Division games are dogfights. It doesn’t matter if it’s Holy Cross, Bordentown, Pemberton or Delran. Both teams are going to show up ready to play and compete.”

The Pirates picked up a 9-7 win early in the season and lost 2-1 at the end of April in Bordentown.

Bordentown has played just twice this year, a loss to Moorestown and a win against Florence. The loss to Moorestown was their most recent contest.

The Scotties finished 2015 with an overall record of 11-14 and 3-5 in the Patriot.

Bordentown was the #7 seed in the Central, Group 2 Tournament. The Scotties were eliminated in the second round by eventual sectional and Group 2 state champions Governor Livingston.

“We’re focused on starting off the division right. One of our first goals every year is to win a division,” Merrill said. “We’ve got our number one going (Staub) and we’re ready to go.”

“They’ve just got to play within themselves, no matter the score or situation,” Merrill said. “No one’s capable of hitting a five-run home run. It isn’t possible. Whatever you’re asked to do that day; that at-bat or that pitch, stay within yourself and do what is asked of you. Make something productive out of every single chance.”
