Pirates football is on their bye week this week, but that doesn’t stop us from recapping the 5-1 start to the 2015 season as they prepare for Burlington City on Friday, October 30.
Cinnaminson football opened the 2015 campaign with a shutout of Robbinsville, 27-0. The shutout marked back-to-back years in which the Pirates did not allow Robbinsville to score a point. Over their last two wins over Robbinsville, the Pirates have outscored them 82-0.
The 27-0 victory to open the season also marked the first time since the 2004 and 2005 seasons that the Pirates won back-to-back season openers.
Cinnaminson would just be getting started as Willingboro came to town for a week two battle. The Pirates moved to 2-0 with a 23-16 victory over the Chimeras, who scored all 16 of their points in the second half.
The defense played well for a second straight week, picking up two interceptions in the first half on picks from Curtis Hickson and Frank Stepnowski.
Week three for the Pirates was another blowout victory as the Pirates throttled Bordentown 38-0 to move to 3-0 in 2015. This game was over as soon as it started, as the Pirates dominated on the ground and the defense barely allowed the Scotties to get anything going on offense.
Freshman running back Rashad Raymond racked up 120 yards on the ground on just nine carries. The victory was the 13th for the Pirates against Bordentown in the all-time series.
One of the biggest tests of the season for the Pirates football team came in week four against Hamilton West, a 15-9 victory on the road.
Cinnaminson struggled throughout the game to get things going on offense, scoring late in the fourth quarter to pull out the victory and move to 4-0. This game was the first this season in which the Pirates trailed as Hamilton West scored first with 2:59 left in the second quarter to take a 6-0 lead.
Quarterback Shaun Davilla scampered 10 yards into the end zone for the winning score.
Week five brought about homecoming at Cinnaminson and a huge rivalry game with Holy Cross. Coming in with a 4-0 record and facing a Lancer squad that was 2-2, the Pirates opened a 21-0 halftime lead over their rivals from Delran.
In what looked like a game that would be easily won by the third quarter, the Lancers did not back down. Cinnaminson built their lead to 27-7, but could not pull out a victory, falling 34-33 for their first loss of the season. The Pirates left four points on the field in the loss to Holy Cross on a failed two-point conversion and two missed PAT kicks.
With a 4-1 record and smarting from the upset loss to Holy Cross, the Pirates hosted Lawrence last Friday night. The result was a 57-28 drubbing of the Cardinals to move their 2015 record to 5-1.
The 57 points scored against Lawrence mark the most points scored in a game under head coach Mario Patrizi. The previous high was 55, against Robbinsville in 2014.
Frank Stepnowski scored three of the Pirates eight touchdowns against the Cardinals, two of them rushing and one receiving. Stepnowski scored on runs of seven yards and one yard and his receiving score was for 34 yards.
The victory was punctuated with a one-yard touchdown run by backup quarterback Mike McAndrews.
