A 3-0 lead in boy’s lacrosse means nothing.

It meant nothing for the Pirates on Friday morning as New Egypt came back to tally their first victory of the season by a score of 10-9 in overtime.

As soon as the Pirates jumped out to a 3-0 lead, head coach Craig Angelini and the rest of the Cinnaminson sideline started yelling, “Sprint to 15.”

Everyone on the field knew that a 3-goal lead would not be enough to win. Which is why Angelini kept telling his players that it would be a sprint to 15 goals.

Tom Schlindwein scored two of the first three goals for Cinnaminson, with Tyler Simcoe getting the middle goal to give the Pirates their 3-0 lead.

“We always focus on improvement and we are on track. We were on the upside of a couple close games and then we are on the downside of one today. This game got away from us a little bit. But, for the most part, guys played really hard and really well,” Angelini said.

New Egypt would tie the game at three before the end of the first quarter and then it became a back-and-forth affair.

The Pirates were staring at a 6-5 deficit at halftime, but that did not matter much for this group of boys.

Alex Artur scored the first two goals of the third quarter, giving Cinnaminson a 7-6 lead. He would give Cinnaminson their final lead of the game at 9-8 with just 1:22 left in the third quarter.

“We have been trying to work offensively as a team. That was a real positive today. I think the team played great. A lot of positives from today. Our team doesn’t quit. It was a slugfest. New Egypt played great. They were fighting for their first win. Nothing really to be ashamed of,” Angelini said.

New Egypt tied the game with 8:38 left in the fourth.

The overtime period saw both teams have chances to score the game winner, but New Egypt could not find the back of the net until there were just 5.8 seconds left on the clock to secure the 10-9 victory.

It is the first loss of the season for the Pirates in what has been the best start in the young history of the program.

Schlindwein finished with four goals. Artur finished with three. Both Simcoe and Mason McLaverty had one goal apiece for Cinnaminson.

Despite such a tough loss, Angelini views the game as a learning experience.

“I don’t think this is a negative thing. I’ve got a lot of young guys and you learn from losses a lot of times more than you learn from wins. It’s all a learning experience. I am trying to teach this game to these kids and build this program. Sometimes you are the hammer and sometimes you are the nail.”

Cinnaminson returns to the field on Monday, April 13 with a road game against Delran High School at 3:45pm.
