Despite having an 0-5 record to start the season, the boy’s volleyball team is not worried about wins and losses right now.
Four of the five losses this year have come against top 15 teams, with three of them coming in one day on Tuesday against St. Joseph’s Metuchen, Southern and Bloomfield.
So, with a home match on Thursday against Woodrow Wilson, the Pirates were looking to work on a variety of things before a huge game with Williamstown Friday night.
They were able to do just that and then some with a 2-0 victory to secure their first win of 2015. Cinnaminson took game one 25-13 and game two 25-16.
Head coach Robert Spier was pleased with his team’s effort on Thursday.
“They (the boys) played well today, which feels even better than our first win. We passed well. Our serving was excellent today. We needed to play this well because we have Williamstown tomorrow, which is a really good team. If we play this well tomorrow we can beat them. There’s not a doubt in my mind, we just need to play like we want to win.”
Each year, Coach Spier does his best to put together one of the toughest schedules around in the hopes that it helps his players improve.
“Losing to the number 1, 6 and 15 team, you learn more from that than from winning against a team that is not even ranked in the top 100. You can win all the powder puff games you want, but you are not going to learn anything from that. If we go deep in the playoffs, two of those teams we will see.”
After six games, the Pirates know what their mistakes are, but confidence is building by the day.
“We served well Tuesday and we served really well today. Today, we were trying a lot of short serves, which is really hard to receive at the high school level because mentally the kids will think that the next serve is not going short too. Playing well today will definitely help us tomorrow and maybe a turning point for our season and we can win a lot more of these games against tougher teams. We can do it. We just need to have that confidence.”
The match against Williamstown is scheduled for 5pm on the road Friday, April 10.
Coach Spier named passing as the biggest area for improvement in preparation for the Williamstown game.
“Our passes were better today, but they need to be even better. The boys love to run plays, but we can’t run plays if we can’t plays. So, if we get our passes better, we can run more offensive plays, which is the fun part of this sport.”
