With the Fall 2015 season in full swing, it means the return of one of our most popular features on the site, the Pirates Athletes of the Week.

There were not a ton of games played this week, with only the field hockey and girl’s volleyball teams playing more than once. Without further adieu, let us get right to the Athletes of the Week for the week ending September 13.

Girl’s Soccer: The girl’s soccer team played only one game, which was a 2-1 overtime victory against Northern Burlington. The honor this week goes to Justyne Gutowski, who scored the sudden death game-winner in OT to hand the Pirates the victory and a 1-0 start to the season.

Boy’s Soccer: Boy’s soccer also played just once this week, a 2-0 loss to Northern Burlington on the road. Despite the loss, junior goalie Mike Deal played well. He made eight saves and kept the Pirates in the game.

Field Hockey: The first honor of the season goes to Maura Tumelty, who scored his first varsity goal on Friday in the 3-2 win over Holy Cross and added her second of the season on Saturday against Riverside in a 2-0 victory.

Girl’s Volleyball: After starting the season 1-1 with a win against Pennsauken Tech and a loss to Moorestown, the Pirates took part in a 24-team tournament at Moorestown on Saturday. Pirates libero Andrea Benites was named awarded the Tourney Libero Award for her strong work. She takes home the Athlete of the Week for girl’s volleyball today.

Girls Tennis: More varsity firsts this week and this time they come from girl’s tennis. This is a co-award this week and it goes to Emmz Trzaska and Lauren Gallo, who both picked up their first varsity wins. They did it as a doubles team in the Pirates 5-0 victory over Burlington City to open the season.

Girl’s Cross Country: Sophomore Haley Adams takes home the honor this week after finishing 13th out of 216 sophomores at the Cherokee Challenge on Saturday.

Football: New quarterback Shaun Davilla, a converted wide receiver, scored three touchdowns (65-yard punt return, 12-yard run and 49-yard pass) to lead the Pirates to a 27-0 opening night win over Robbinsville Friday night. We takes home the first football Athlete of the Week.

Check back next Sunday for the Pirates Athletes of the Week for the week ending September 20.
