Cinnaminson junior Mike Ungvarsky competed at the Group 2 state meet on Saturday afternoon at Northern Burlington in the 3200 and returned home a state champion.
Ungvarsky qualified for the state meet last weekend at the Group 2 Sectional meet and will now race in the Meet of Champions on Wednesday, June 8.
Ungvarsky entered the race as the #11 seed, but won the event by less than two seconds with a time of 9:19.70. River Dell High School’s Will Daly finished second with a time of 9:21.61.
“From the start of the race I stuck with the pack and kept moving up,” Ungvarsky told Cinn City Sports. “When there were two laps to go I made a move to take the lead and had to take it out because those guys have such great kicks.”
“When I had 200 left I knew I had to give everything I had to get the win or I would regret it later, so I took off. It was really everything I had hoped for, and to be able to get the win against such great competitors that have accomplished so much in their running careers made it so fulfilling for me.”
Boy’s track and field head coach Dan Fourney said, “Mike had a plan going into the race on how to win and he followed that plan to perfection.”
Ungvarsky is the first Pirate to win a state title in the 3200 since Jon Anderson reached the milestone in 2004.
Check back later tonight for full results from the second day of the Group 2 state meet at Northern Burlington.
