Girl’s Tennis Wins Opening Round of South, Group 2 Tourney

Having not played a match in six days because of the weather, the girl’s tennis team got back on the court Monday afternoon with a first round playoff match against Barnegat in the South, Group 2 tournament, coming away with a 5-0 win.

“The concern was we haven’t played since the 29th of September,” head coach Matt Perekupka said.

“It was a six-day layoff because of the weather. As a coach, you always have concerns how your team’s gonna come out and play after not playing for six days. With that break, everyone had a chance to refresh themselves, regroup, and I think everybody played their best tennis we had in awhile.”

The win for the Pirates allows them to advance to the second round of the tournament. Round two will be played on Wednesday against the three-seed, Delsea, at their courts.

“Playoff matches are always a nice thing to have under your belt,” Perekupka said.

“To get the playoff win and then on Wednesday we have Delsea, which will be a tough opponent, so we just kind of ride the momentum from today into practice tomorrow and hopefully into Wednesday. We will see what happens.”

Girl’s tennis is now 5-3 on the season.

Cinnaminson picked up wins from Jenna Cuccinota at first singles 6-3, 6-0; Tori Robinson at second singles 6-1, 6-1 ; Rebekah Adams at third singles 6-1, 7-5; Lauren Gallo and Emma Trzaska at first doubles 6-2, 6-4 and Danicka Moore and Maddie Figiel at second doubles 7-5, 6-4 to win the match 5-0.

The victories in the first and second singles were complete in two very quick sets, but that is not what Perekupka is looking for within each match.

“We’ve had matches that have been both quick and then long all season,” Perekupka said. “We make sure we understand that this is one step to our ultimate goal, to continue in the playoffs.”

“Regardless of how you won today, we are looking forĀ a team effort. The most important score is Cinnaminson won, rather than how you won. Enjoy the win for today. Come out tomorrow and get back to work.”

The second round of the girl’s tennis South, Group 2 tournament will be played Wednesday, October 7 at 3pm at Delsea, the three-seed in the bracket.
